Cadillac presents premium plug-in hybrid CT6

CADILLAC debuted the CT6 Prestige Sedan for the Asian market at Auto Shanghai 2015. The carmaker announced it will introduce another edited version of its upcoming range-topping CT6 sedan, with the Plug-In Hybrid Electric (PHEV) propulsion system that is designed to achieve more than double the fuel economy of traditional gasoline engines.

The CT6 marks Cadillac’s long-awaited return to the global prestige luxury segment. It is one of eight new vehicles that Cadillac plans to unveil by the end of the decade.

CT6 has one of the industry’s most advanced automotive body structures. The aluminum-intensive architecture incorporates 11 different materials to achieve strength, performance and efficiency virtually unequalled in luxury performance sedans.

It is enhanced by active-on-demand all-wheel drive, active rear steering and Magnetic Ride Control on the available Active Chassis System. Active rear steering with the Active Chassis System contributes to greater ability at low speeds and greater stability at high speeds. For parking, its turning arc is a mere 11.4 meters.

The all-new Cadillac 3.0L Twin Turbo engine propelling the CT6 offers peak output of 298 kilowatts and top torque of 543Nm, making it among the most power-intensive V6 engines in the segment.

The CT6’s lightweight, compact design and two-gear transfer case enable greater fuel economy than conventional fixed-torque all-wheel drive systems. All-wheel drive is standard on all CT6 six-cylinder models.

The comprehensive infotainment system in the CT6 includes articulating 10-inch-diagonal screens that retract into the front seatbacks and a Cadillac-first Bose Panaray audio system featuring 34 speakers for exceptional dynamic range and clarity.

Safety is a priority in the CT6. Its rear camera mirror is the industry’s first application of full-display technology, combining camera technology with the conventional inside mirror to project an unobstructed view. A 360-degree camera view around the vehicle, displayed on the Cadillac CUE screen, helps reduce blind spots.

The CT6 is one of the 12 models that are showcased at Shanghai GM’s Cadillac display at Auto Shanghai 2015.

The new PHEV edition of the CT6 will be capable of greater than 60 kilometers of all-electric range. Paired with Cadillac’s 2.0-liter turbo, 4-cylinder gas engine, it offers estimated fuel efficiency of approximately 2.0 liters per 100 kilometers, based on China testing standards. The CT6 PHEV will qualify under China new energy vehicle regulations and incentives.

The CT6 PHEV takes advantage of the car’s advanced lightweight structure to create a unique new formula for the prestige sedan.

“The first-ever CT6 is a technological showcase throughout, making it an ideal platform for Cadillac to offer its first plug-in hybrid,” said Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen. “In the CT6, Cadillac presents a new formula for prestige luxury. The advanced plug-in hybrid system is a key addition, providing a combination of exceptional fuel economy, crisp acceleration and strong electric driving range.”

The CT6 Plug-In Hybrid system is designed to provide all-electric driving for most daily commutes, while maximizing fuel efficiency by providing blended power from the engine and battery at higher speeds and higher loads, even when there is energy stored in the battery.

The Cadillac CT6 PHEV combines an all-new rear wheel electric variable transmission with exclusively designed motors to provide smooth, spirited acceleration.

The two-motor EVT also uses three traditional planetary gears and is complemented by a 2.0-liter turbo, 4-cylinder engine with spark-ignited direct injection and variable valve technology. The use of a two-motor system provides smooth and seamless power through the entire driving range.

“The CT6 PHEV will deliver exceptional smooth, responsive acceleration that luxury sedan owners demand,” said Travis Hester, Cadillac CT6 executive chief engineer. “We have managed to achieve superior drive quality when compared with our PHEV competitors due to our exclusively designed EVT.”
