XJTLU emerges as international university

THE emergence of international universities is gradually changing China’s higher education pattern. More than just diversifying choices for Chinese students, they have linked international technology and industrial resources, enabling further knowledge transfer and economic benefits.
When Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University celebrated its 10-year anniversary on July 26, they also launched an International Technology Transfer Center and an International Innovation Hub in Suzhou, where the campus is located. Growing from a university with 163 students to an innovation and entrepreneurship pivot containing more than 10,000 students, XJTLU infuses the market with an international mentality and is stepping up to link foreign technologies to industrial applications in China.
Based on its research fields spreading over biochemistry, physics, Big Data, economy, supply chain management and designing, 11 research centers have been established to support research and development involved in its technology transfer center and innovation hub.
In cooperation with Suzhou Industrial Park, the local government sponsors 10 million yuan (US$1.5 million) annually on XJTLU over five years since 2016.
Xu Dechang, head of XJTLU’s research and graduate studies office who is responsible for the development of the center and hub, told Shanghai Daily that the government takes these projects as part of the construction of the industrial park by ushering in globally advanced technologies.
The technology transfer center helps protect intellectual properties of foreign technologies and matches them to local companies seeking relevant technical improvement. Students of XJTLU can be involved in the research, and help develop businesses. The innovation center intends to cultivate startups which serve not only university students but also entrepreneurs across the world.
Xu said XJTLU sees itself as a research-led entrepreneurship university, where students can develop research capability and practical experience at the same time. Over 80 percent of its graduates are admitted by the top-200 universities listed in the Times Ranking and 10 percent are employed by Fortune 500 companies. Most of the remainder are developing their own business, for example, a student who raised over 5 million yuan for his smart home project last year.
XJTLU and competitors such as the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, New York University Shanghai and Duke Kunshan University are accepted by more Chinese students who want to broaden global horizon by combining the mentalities from East and West.
