Troubles about taxi hailing

DIDI Chuxing said today it will gradually cancel a function that suggest riders to give tips to taxi drivers after arguments and skepticism rose over the weekend that hailing taxi or rental cars have become extremely difficult ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday.

Taxi riders are sometimes suggested to pay tips ranging from 3 to 10 yuan for taxi riders when they order a ride through Didi’s platform to encourage them to pick up passengers during peak hours.

Online postings and complaints started to circulate over the weekend that it’s hard to secure a taxi ride despite paying 10 or 15 yuan as a premium for drivers and some users also said they have to pay two or three times the normal price to hail a chauffeur service through Didi’s application.

Didi said that without the suggested tips some riders might have to wait longer before taxi drivers pick up their orders and that all of the tips goes directly to taxi drivers.  Riders can still choose to give tips to drivers on their own volition, it added.

Lou Wen, a senior director at Didi, wrote on the Chinese Q&A online community Zhihu.com over the weekend that taxi transport capability in big cities dropped sharply in recent days as many drivers left to visit their hometowns for the Spring Festival.

The number of car-hailing drivers has decreased 25 percent, but passengers and orders increased about 30 percent at the same time, Luo pointed out.
