Taiwan ‘in favor of joining’
TAIWAN’S leader is in favor of joining the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, he was reported as saying yesterday, making it the latest economy to express interest in joining the institution.
Ma Ying-jeou’s remarks came after the bank, which the United States has opposed, attracted several potential new members this month, including American allies Britain and South Korea.
“I am in favor of joining in principle,” Ma told a Taiwan newspaper.
“We should not stay on the sidelines. We should actively participate in it.”
Chinese authorities have said the institution would finance regional development alongside other lenders such as the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.
