Pricy phones more popular, survey shows
MARKET share of smartphones cost 2,000 yuan(US$308) or above added 2.44 percent to 48.2 percent in the third quarter from three months ago, and among which Apple's share gained 0.94 percent.
Among Android phones, OPPO's share was up 1.27 percent, and Vivo and Huawei also saw their share gained in the three months ended March 31, which others such as Samsung, Xiaomi and Coolpad saw their suffered from declines.
On the contrary, market share of phones priced below 1,000 yuan have continued to decline, dropping nearly 1.76 percent, while those priced between 1,000 and 1,999 yuan fell 0.68 percent, due to increasing demand from consumers to upgrade their devices.
A number of smartphone manufacturers launched new medium and high-end models in March and as a result a large number of new flagship phones entered the market, bringing intense competition.
"It would be harder for smartphone makers to stand out among mid and high-end devices in the coming months and manufacturers have to set a relatively high quality standard to win the competition," vice president Gong Yi at Nielsen China said.
In February, Huawei’s market share in first tier cities surpasses its national level for the first time, thanks to a series of premiumization campaigns.
The Nielsen report also suggested that stylish and high quality smartphones are more appealing to consumers from first tier cities, meaning that competition would become more fierce in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou.
