McDonald’s ambitious on digitalization

MCDONALD’S Corp said it will complete the renovation for 90 percent of its restaurants in Shanghai by the end of this year as part of its efforts to push forward the digitalization transformation.

It also rolled out table service over the weekend to cater the demand of family diners at a total of 1,000 restaurants around the country.

McDonald’s Shanghai division is going to recruit 6,000 new employees this year to help diners get familiar with the digital transformation and table service; nationwide it will add 70,000 new staff this year.

Wayne Luo, general manager for Shanghai market at McDonald's, told a media briefing that it would continue to upgrade hardware and dining services to enhance customer experience.

Digital upgrades include self-ordering kiosk, customized burger menu, digital menu board as well as dual point system. Luo said the upgrades had helped the fast-food chain to enhance operation efficiency especially during peak hours.

Currently, an average of about 20 percent of orders are completed on self ordering kiosks at its Shanghai restaurants, and nationwide, around 45 percent of orders at McDonald's restaurants are made through cashless payments.
