Male employees better paid in China: survey

Male employees in China are better paid than female as family role distracts women from career pursuit and companies increased hiring women that require lower salaries on cost concerns, 51job.com said in a survey today.

It found nearly a quarter of male respondents and only 9.5 percent women said their pre-tax salary exceeded 10,000 yuan (US$1,613) per month, according to the online recruitment portal’s survey covering 16,361 respondents nationwide.

Women are generally slower in career advancement because of their heavier role in raising and educating children, the report said.

As companies became more cautious over costs, they tend to hire more women than men because of the overall lower salary requirements of female workers, it said.

Overall, the report found 60 percent respondents are paid less than 5,000 yuan a month.

Most positions with the booming computer sciences and Internet sectors are not well-paid as the information industry recruit heavily for labor-intensive data procession and customer services roles.
