IOT to light up China’s streets

CHINA’S street lighting will boast new features such as Internet connection, energy efficiency and high-level security over several years as cities have drawn up blueprints to transform themselves into smart cities.

Philips Lighting said yesterday that it will partner China Mobile Research Institute to explore the potential for a standard for connected lighting under a cellular Internet of Things. Philips Lighting is demonstrating the connected street light application in Beijing.

More cities, including Shanghai, will have street lighting equipped with the new technology, Philips Lighting said, without providing details.

Smart cities, sustainable offices and connected home systems are three strategic sectors for Philips Lighting in China, Eric Rondolat, the company’s CEO, said yesterday in Shanghai.

It has set up its second-biggest global research center in China.

China’s IOT market is set to grow an average 13.3 percent a year to US$361 billion by 2020.
