Dubai Week in China opens in Shanghai

Dubai expects to help its country enhance the collaboration with China under the Belt and Road Initiative, and share experience with Shanghai in hosting the World Expo and in optimizing the free trade zones, officials from the city of the United Arab Emirates said during the Dubai Week in China, which was opened today in Shanghai.

“With a strong foundation of mutual respect and trust, strengthened by the common goals of our Look East focus and China’s Belt and Road Initiative, the bilateral relations continues to grow,” said Fahad Al Gergawi, chief executive officer of Dubai Investment Development Agency.

“In addition to being home to a thriving Chinese community and welcoming increasing numbers of Chinese visitors every year, Dubai is preparing to host World Expo 2020, and we look forward to learning more from Shanghai’s success in 2010,” Gergawi said.

Dubai and Shanghai have been twin cities since 2000, and Shanghai can learn from the practice of Dubai in many areas, especially in operating its ports and trade zones, said Liu Min, deputy chairwoman of the Shanghai Commission of Commerce.

The Dubai Week in China started last year, with the inaugural event held in Beijing. Dubai’s government officials and senior representatives will contribute to discussions spanning business, World Expo, education and sport with their Shanghai counterparts to enhance communication and understanding.

Over 4,200 Chinese companies are operating in the UAE right now, up from 18 in 2005. China has been the second largest trading partner of the UAE since 2011, and the largest trading partner of Dubai. Last year, Dubai received 450,000 Chinese tourists, an increase of 29 percent from the previous year.
