China-tailored iOS to be available this autumn

APPLE Inc today released features specifically for Chinese consumers on next-generation iPhone operating system, which will be officially available in fall and cover Chinese-English translation on Siri, short message fraud extension, Shanghai dialect dictation and phone number as Apple ID.

The move is seen to woo local consumers and to back Apple China revenue, which decreased in the recent quarters with the challenges from local smartphone vendors like Huawei and Oppo, industry insiders said.

Apple said the features, such as voice recognition of Shanghai dialects and warning consumers for suspicious incoming calls, are going to be built in the new iOS 11, the next generation of iPhone and iPad which will be officially released in fall, Apple said in the WWDC, its biggest developer conference held annually.

But Apple is relatively “slow” as similar features have already been developed and adopted by local companies including Tencent with WeChat, Baidu and Xiaomi. For example, WeChat and Alibaba’s Alipay have supported QR scanning for several years while Xiaomi offers SMS fraud marking and warning features for all models.

The support of Shanghai dialect and mobile phone number of Apple ID are welcomed.

IOS has supported Cantonese voice input already. Shanghai is an international finance and fashion center, where Apple should boost its market shares in the city.  Besides official ID card, mobile number has been top priority choice for Chinese consumers to register for various online services. The change will help people easy use Apple ID in China, where some iPhone users still have no emails.
