China reaches agreement on US apples

CHINA has reached an agreement with the United States to allow all US grown apples to enter Chinese market, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
“USDA values the relationship we are forging with China to bring mutually-beneficial food and agricultural trade to Americans and Chinese alike,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack in a statement, adding that the agreement will give a “significant boost in sales for American apple producers.”
USDA reached the agreement with China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine in San Francisco at the weekend, according to the USDA source. It is estimated that within two years, exports to China will reach a value of nearly US$100 million per year, USDA said.
China and the US have been making efforts to normalize the apple trade since imports of red and golden delicious apples from Washington state were suspended in 2012 as they were susceptible to pests.
Last October, China lifted the suspension on apples from the state after USDA and the US apple industry agreed to take additional measures to safeguard apples from disease.
USDA said the past six years had been the strongest for the agricultural trade, with exports totaling US$771.7 billion since 2009. Apple exports exceeded more than US$1 billion in 2013.
