China Mobile’s first AR product unveiled

A China Mobile’s subsidiary kicked off an AR (augmented reality) smart glass yesterday in Shanghai, the mobile’s carrier’s first AR product.

The glass will start sales for industrial users covering architecture, hospital, education and digital entertainment industries in the second quarter, with a consumer-oriented version debut in the third quarter, said Migu, a China Mobile’s subsidiary on digital entertainment covering online video and various gadgets.

The Migu Glass, with Qualcomm’s processors inside and super high-definition screens, is developed by ODG or Osterhout Design Group, a US-based AR device maker. China Mobile, with more than 900 million users nationwide, will distribute the glass nationwide.

Augmented reality (AR) is a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data.

In China, the glasses are going to be used in industrial sectors like manufacture, tourism, education and hospitals, said China Mobile.

AR hardware products are expected to still contribute majority revenue of the whole industry, which will hit US$22 billion by 2020 compared with US$5.2 billion in 2017, according to Shanghai-based consulting firm iResearch.

Compared with VR mainly covering entertainment demands, AR has a wide variety of applications, especially in industrial sectors, said Lily Zou, president of iResearch.
