China Eastern awards captain, crew for avoiding air disaster

CHINA Eastern Airlines has rewarded one of its captains for quick thinking and avoiding a potential air tragedy in October.

Captain He Chao was awarded three million yuan for his presence of time during a flight at Hongqiao Airport on October 11, according to xinmin.cn.

The crew of the China Eastern’s A320 aircraft, captained by He, also received 600,000 yuan as rewards.

The Airbus 320 Flight MU5643 to Tianjin was taking off around noon on October 11 when an Airbus 330 from Beijing landed and began taxing across the same runway.

He decided to continue the take off as the aircraft speed had reached more than 240 kilometers per hour. He flew over the A330 with the two aircraft only 19 meters away from each other, according to an investigation by the Civil Aviation Administration of China.

It said the air traffic controllers had given the wrong orders to the pilot of A330 to taxi into the same runway where the A320 was taking off.

The licenses of two air traffic controllers were revoked and 13 air traffic control officials were punished for the incident last month.
