Chevrolet depicts future mobility at auto show

CHEVROLET is proactively reaching out to more young consumers at the ongoing 2015 Shanghai Auto Show, exhibiting a complete line-up for the digital generation at its 3,550-square-meter stand.

At this, the biggest auto show of China this year, Chevrolet’s presentation is a show in itself. Spectacular LED screen video shows and lights are choreographed into a highly immersive and entertaining environment to showcase Chevrolet designs, performance and technology. In a special interactive zone, visitors are encouraged to upload photos taken at the display site for social media sharing.

Indeed, the site has plenty of highlights worth a photo or two.

Making its global debut at the show is the Chevrolet FNR, which stands for “find new roads.” It is a concept car exploring future mobility that may transform the way Chinese people travel. It’s a fitting presentation to mark the carmaker’s 10th anniversary in China.

Developed in Shanghai by GM’s Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center joint venture, the FNR is an autonomous and intelligent electric concept vehicle for tomorrow’s younger customers.

Its capsule design is futuristic. It has crystal laser headlights and taillights, dragonfly dual swing doors, magnetic hubless wheel electric motors and a wireless auto-charging system.

It seems to embrace ideas only seen hitherto in science fiction movies. There are sensors and roof-mounted radar to help the car fully take in its surroundings to enable driverless operation. It functions like a “personal assistant,” mapping out the best route to reach the preferred destination.

In self-driving mode, the vehicle’s front seats can be turned 180 degrees to enable face-to-face communication with rear seat passengers. The driver can take back vehicle control anytime through a gesture control feature.

The all-new Malibu, based on eighth generation development, is also on exhibit as an inducement to younger car buyers. It’s the best example of Chevrolet’s “Designed to Raise Your Heartbeat” slogan.

The car is energetic inside and out. It integrates a narrow upper grille with eagle eye-shaped headlights. It features Chevrolet’s iconic sculptural dual-port grille with chrome trim, and semi-framed fog lamps that work together to present a sharp three-dimensional look balanced by the sedan’s well-rounded rear fascia. Its dual-element taillights were inspired by those on the first-generation Malibu.

The power options, which include a 2.4L Ecotec SIDI engine and a 2.0L DVVT engine, both fitted with a new-generation six-speed automatic transmission, uphold the brand’s fun-to-drive philosophy. Its European-style sports chassis, which is built on GM’s most advanced upper-medium sedan platform, adds to the driving pleasure that today’s younger car buyers crave.

The 2015 Captiva, while carrying on the rugged and imposing image of an American SUV, presents a younger and sportier appearance than its predecessor.

Newly designed front fog lamps with chrome trim add to the dynamic look, and a matte silver guard plate that runs across the front fascia beneath the bumper to support resistance to abrasion gives the front end a sturdier appearance. The exterior color adds stylish new mocha brown to its palette.

Other styling touches are wing-shape portholes with chrome trim set off by black paint, matrix-type dual exhausts, body-tone, dual-color door handles and a metallic roof rack.

A 2.4L Ecotec DVVT engine and a six-speed automatic transmission with Eco mode comprise the car’s standard powertrain, which makes the latest edition a road-going SUV with superior shifting quality, handling and fuel economy.

To increase its contemporary appeal, especially with the digital generation, the 2015 Captiva is equipped with Chevrolet’s new MyLink infotainment system and a segment-leading 7-inch multi-touch screen that supports double-screen interaction, intelligent voice messaging and auto-based apps.
