Central, Eastern European countries seek Chinese investment

Countries in Central and Eastern Europe are banking on China’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative to attract more Chinese investment and boost economic relations with China.

“Under the ‘One Belt, One Road’ strategy, China is seeking to boost multilateral economic ties with Central and Eastern European countries. That is a good opportunity for Hungary’s economic development,” Tamas Marczali, chief executive officer of New Wave Investment Ltd, said during the first China-CEEC Investment and Trade Expo in Ningbo.

New Wave Investment is a Hungarian agency aiming to offer foreign investors opportunities in Hungary.

Hungary has been at the forefront of deepening cooperation with China. Earlier this month, it became the first European country to sign a memorandum of understanding for China’s new Silk Road initiative to expand development in the Eurasian and Southeast Asian regions.

“Hungary has an abundance of patented technologies and we’re looking forward to Chinese investors coming on board to take part in mutual development,” Marczali said.

An investment program that was promoted at the trade expo was the iGas mini gas station. Equipped with a LCD touch screen, the patented gas station system allows self-serve refueling and shopping. It also has cameras and other sensors to gather information such as gender, age and emotion of customers for targeted marketing.

Investing in this program will allow investors to gain a residence permit and ownership of real estate in Hungary.

Slovenia is seeking more investment from private Chinese enterprises as the country is undergoing the reform of state-owed assets.

“Currently, Chinese investors in Slovenia are mainly big enterprises and state-owned companies. We hope more private companies will tap the Slovenian market as reform is opening up huge opportunities,” said Yin Xiaoxiao, the General Representative of Slovenian Travel and Investment Development Committee in China.
