Brokerage enlightens protection of Eastern heritage

IN the early Tang Dynasty, 28-year-old Xuanzang walked westward to fetch the Buddhist scriptures and seek the truth of faith, which is historically recorded by fresco in Dunhuang Grottoes.
This piece of story is the source of inspiration for an exhibition named “Enlightenment”, which is co-organized by Shanghai Orient Securities Foundation, YICAI Foundation and Dunhuang Research Academy.
The exhibition, which started on December 18, is held in order to protect and promote the beauty of Dunhuang Art, especially for Dunhuang frescoes and clay paintings.
Dunhuang, a city in northwestern Gansu Province in western China, commands a strategic position at the crossroads of the Silk Road between China, Western Asia and India.
The exhibition features a 420-second video clip titled “Sunglow of Mogao”, more than 700 pieces of precious handpainted clay paintings, five pieces of Mogao scriptures and a Dunhuang frescoes multimedia interaction area.
“Sunglow of Mogao” is an animation about Xuanzang’s journey. The animation consists of more than 2,000 clay tablets. It took 9 months for the team to complete drawing of clay paintings by using sand of Min Sha Mountain and soil of Da Quan River in Dunhuang. There is also a documentary film describes the production process of the clay paintings, including selections of materials, tools and team members who participated in the video clip.
There is also a multimedia interaction area of Dunhuang frescoes in the exhibition. Visitors can draw on papers and watch their productions on the screen through the use of scanning technology. “The multimedia interaction area is favorable for young audience and children,” said representatives from Shanghai Orient Securities Foundation.
“Shanghai Orient Securities Foundation insists on protecting Eastern culture and set it as the mission of our foundation. We hope to display the traditional Eastern culture with new vitality through this exhibition,” said Li Bin, chairman of Shanghai Orient Securities Foundation.
“At the same time, we try to pass on valuable qualities and spirits. For the audience, they could learn the tenacity and perseverance in pursuit of the truth of Xuanzang. This is also something our foundation would like to deliver to fulfill corporate social responsibility,” Li said.
The exhibition is part of the cultural heritage plan of Shanghai OrientSecurities Foundation. Shanghai Orient Securities Foundation has launched the “Meet the beauty of Dunhuang” cultural heritage plan earlier this year. The foundation chose the way of digital protection of Dunhuang culture, trying to borrow the latest technology to display Dunhuang frescoes. Through the exhibition, the foundation hopes to attract more attention to the beauty of Dunhuang culture and help people to understand, to protect and to love this world heritage.
In 2014, Orient Securities initiated a public service program committed to the promotion and protection of intangible cultural heritage, and the expansion of forms of inheritance. The objective of the program is to call the public’s attention to learn and protect cultural heritage. This is the program’s third year since the foundation was first established.

The exhibition is now open to the public in the Power Station of Art, the contemporary art museum which is located on 200 Huayuangang Road in Huangpu District.
