BMW visions beyond driving pleasure

BMW expects greener, more connected and autonomous cars to define the future of mobility, a vision that will pose challenges to its own slogan "sheering driving pleasure".

Packing all those futuristic qualities, the BMW Vision Next 100 concept car went on a world tour staring from Beijing today as part of BMW's centenary celebration. Looking forward to its next century, the German premium carmaker put sees China as its most important market and base for innovations.

For some time-honored traditions, self-reinvention is inevitable. In the concept car, the brand's iconic kidney grill is stripped of its traditional role for air intakes, which its electric powertrain doesn't need like the traditional internal combustion engine.

Instead, the signature design stays for consolidating various sensors for the car to be observant enough to know its way around all by itself.

As a brand known for making sporty cars, BMW is cautious about taking away the fun of driving from its customers. With a retractable steering wheel, the concept car enables a quick switch from a "brain-off" ease mode to a boost mode that is even more intensely driver-oriented.

And numerous red triangles on the surface are coordinated to form Alive Geometry design. It gives part of the car an elastic skin to adapt to steering movements, making it an "organic" machine for optimal aerodynamic performance.
