Apple to build first local data center for iCloud services in China

APPLE plans to invest US$1 billion to establish a data center in Guizhou Province for online synchronization service iCloud, its first local data center in the Chinese mainland.
Customers in China are used to storing all important data in iCloud and making synchronization on all devices. Keeping eyes on the future, this new project aims to advance the products and services with better security and higher speed, according to a statement by Apple, which signed cooperation agreement with Guizhou government officials on the iCloud data center today.
The establishment of new iCloud data center will improve iCloud user experience by “faster and more stable access to the data service”, said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives.
The new data center meets China’s demand to keep data locally and improve user experience of iPhone in the domestic market, where Apple faces challenges from local rivals, analysts said.
According to various reports, the new data center, like all the other, is fully powered by 100 percent renewable energy. Apple has cooperated with Guizhou Province and several local companies in running data service, both sides said.
