Amazon Prime’s debut in China to aid cross-border buyers

AMAZON Prime service, which offers unlimited free shipping services, comes to China today, ahead of China’s annual shopping festival in November and Black Friday sales globally.

With the debut of Prime, Amazon’s core service in the overseas markets, the world’s No. 1 e-commerce website aims to woo more Chinese consumers to purchase products on its website, especially the cross-border e-commerce market, because China has become strategic market of Amazon globally, according to Russ Grandinetti, Amazon senior vice president coming to Beijing today to debut Prime.

In China, Amazon’s Prime service costs 388 yuan (US$57) a year, compared with US$99 a year in the US market. It supports free shipping services of 4 million products able to be directly delivered to China from the United States’ Amazon market and 9 million products in Amazon China.

For the cross-border shipping, consumers in 82 major cities including Shanghai are able to receive them within 5 to 9 working days on average. With sales of limited time, Amazon Prime service in China now costs 188 yuan, with one month trial for free.

The new service will help Amazon China, one of a few overseas dot-com firms still working in China, to improve its service in the fierce-competed domestic market dominated by Alibaba and JD.com, which also have expanded into the cross-board business.

Chinese consumers were expected to spend totally US$86 billion for overseas products through cross-border e-commerce, 48 percent growth year-on-year, according to Analysys International, a Beijing-based research firm.
