Alibaba says no to 'malicious' complaints over IPR

ALIBABA Group said today it has officially filed a lawsuit against a domestic intellectual property right agency, which made complaints about Alibaba’s vendors over fake intellectual property documents or trademark proofs, and Beijing Dongcheng District People's Court has accepted the case.
Alibaba said that Hangzhou Wangwei Technology Co has been abusing the counterfeit notice and takedown system by providing malicious or false IPR complaints.
"We're resorting to legal measures to fight against unscrupulous intellectual property right agents and to bring order back to the platform," said Zheng Junfang Chief Platform Governance Officer at Alibaba Group.
Hangzhou Wangwei insisted it does not make fake allegations and has been protecting intellectual property rights in a righteous and lawful way, and it reiterates the work is beneficiary to the protection of IPR, according to a statement on its official website.
The e-commerce company operates on a system in which it bars merchants under complaint as soon as the intellectual property rights holders or an authorized third party filed a complaint to the platform.
Overall, the complaints from Wangwei Technology, including false allegations, forged documents and trademark squatting, accounted for over 20 percent of the total complaints handled by Alibaba.
Alibaba demands a total of 1.1 million yuan of compensation and an open apology from Wangwei Technology.
