A MAN who allegedly stabbed an official to death has committed suicide in Hubei Province.

The body of the suspected killer, who was identified as Ni, was discovered in a marsh outside a medical school in Tianmen City, Changjiang Times reported today.

Ni allegedly stabbed Xu Jirong, 50, director of the landscape bureau in Tianmen City, in the neck and chest in his office on Tuesday due to a dispute over the leasing of a fish pond.

Ni reportedly leased an area of a lake from the landscape bureau to run an aquaculture business, but it had decided to terminate the agreement next year, the report said, citing an unidentified insider.

The bureau planned to build a park beside the lake and relocate all the fish ponds.

Villagers who had leased ponds in the lake were reportedly angry and had disputes with the bureau over compensation, the report said.

However, the bureau said the majority of people in Tianmen asked the government to get rid of the fish ponds to make space for a park. The city government also planned to use the lake as part of its drainage system, the report said.

The city government has provided a total of 3.3 million yuan (US$481,550) in compensation to fish pond lease holders and given them unemployment and medical insurance usually reserved for urban residents, according to the bureau.

Ni was reportedly the only wage earner in his family. Two of his brothers died of cancer while his other brother is paralyzed. Ni left behind a wife and daughter. All were questioned by police, the report said.

Ni once made money from the fish pond and a transport business. He even built a three-floor house for his family, the newspaper said.

Ni allegedly entered Xu's office about 3pm and the official was heard screaming immediately afterwards, the report said.

Ni was seen jumping out a window from Xu's second-floor office and escaping in a car, the newspaper said.

He was later seen at home in the car with blood on his face, according to the report.

Meanwhile, another bureau director in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region was stabbed to death by a subordinate three days ago, according to North News.

Jin, 58, chief of the Yellow River engineering bureau of Inner Mongolia's water resources department in Hohhot, was reportedly involved in a verbal dispute with an employee over his salary.

The employee, who was identified as Ya, went to Jin's office on the third floor about 9:45am and allegedly stabbed Jin in the chest several times.

Ya, 46, then went downstairs to the first floor and assaulted Guo, head of the department, according to the report.

Guo, 46, suffered stab wounds to the chest and left arm.

Jin died on the way to hospital.

Ya was detained by police, the report said.
