Key index falls for third day in a row

SHANGHAI'S key stock index continued to fall yesterday for the third day over concern for the performances of listed companies.

The Shanghai Composite Index dropped 1.76 percent, or 33.42 points, to close at 1,863.80 points. Turnover was 48.3 billion yuan (US$7.05 billion) compared to Tuesday's 66.9 billion yuan. Losers outnumbered gainers 666 to 195 and 47 remained unchanged.

The financial sector was sluggish. Haitong Securities, who said 2.07 billion shares would become tradable on December 29, was down 6.72 percent to 7.22 yuan. Sinolink Securities retreated 1.33 percent to 24.52 yuan.

Industrial & Commercial Bank of China was down 1.36 percent to 3.63 yuan. China Construction Bank dipped 0.50 percent to 3.95 yuan. Industrial Bank Co fell 2.12 percent to 15.23 yuan.

China Shenhua Energy Co, the nation's largest coal producer, retreated 3.20 percent to 18.13 yuan. China Pacific Insurance (Group) Co lowered 1.75 percent to 10.68 yuan.

Shandong Gold Mining Co, which is buying a 74-percent stake in Chifeng Chaihulanzi Gold Mining Co, was down 1.89 percent to 46.74 yuan.

Hainan Airlines was up 3.64 percent to 3.42 yuan after news of 590 million yuan in government aid.

China Eastern Airlines Corp surged by the daily cap of 10 percent to 4.66 yuan and China Southern Airlines added 2.33 percent to 3.52 yuan.
