The Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court has accepted the case. The Yangpu District Shuhai Advanced Studies School, which offers Chinese courses for foreigners, is seeking about 1.1 million yuan (US$160,607) in compensation. Beijng Longtuo Advertising Co Ltd, which published the article on its Website, is also named in the lawsuit. Shuhai said the university published on the Website an article, which talked about the "swindle" of teaching Chinese to foreigners, on June 21. The article said the legal representative of the school was a swindler and that the school hired only two temporary employees in addition to the headmaster. It also alleged that for a 7,500-yuan fee, you could get a certificate whether you were competent or not. The article was false and had destroyed the school's reputation, Shuhai said. The university denied it published the article. It said the school had tried to cooperate with it to provide education programs by making use of its fame. The request was refused, and this was the reason for the lawsuit, it said. Copyright © 2001-2009 Shanghai Daily Publishing House |
