This marked the first drop after three years of steady increase. The number of tourists into and from China through the Pudong International Airport between October 1 and December 1 dwindled to 773,669, down 20% from the same months last year, due to the global recession. Japan, South Korea and United States led the country list in tourist arrivals. While domestic travelers to Taiwan doubled in the second half of the year to reach 63,290 after mainland tourist groups are permitted to visit the island.
