CONSTRUCTION on a second bridge over Hangzhou Bay began on Sunday, Eastday.com reported yesterday.

The Jiashao Bridge will reduce the traveling time between Shanghai and Shaoxing City in Zhejiang Province by about 40 minutes.

The 69.46-kilometer bridge between Zhejiang's Jiaxing City and Shaoxing will be the second bridge over Hangzhou Bay. A 36-kilometer bridge linking Shanghai with the port city of Ningbo opened on May 1. About 10.29 kilometers of Jiashao Bridge will be across Hangzhou Bay, the report added.

The bridge will cost an estimated 13.98 billion yuan (US$2.04 billion) and is expected to be finished in 2012. It will feature an eight-lane highway with a designated speed limit of 120 kilometers an hour.

The new bridge is a key part of the National Expressway Network from north China's Shenyang City in Liaoning Province to Haikou City, Hainan Province in the south of China. It is also an important part of the Zhejiang Province Expressway blueprint, said Guo Jianbiao, director of the Zhejiang provincial traffic department.

Jiashao Bridge is Shaoxing's biggest infrastructure investment.

It will take vehicles about 90 minutes to travel between Shaoxing and Shanghai upon completion of the bridge compared to the current two-hour plus on the Shanghai-Hangzhou Expressway, the report said.
