The new direct service for letters and parcels, express mail and postal remittances should speed up connections between both sides of the Taiwan Strait. "Total delivery time may be reduced by a day," said Chen Xu of the Shanghai Mail Processing Center. In the past, about 5,000 to 6,000 letters and post cards were delivered from Shanghai to Taiwan every day, but they had to be routed through Hong Kong or Macau. In the past, an "express delivery" could take five to seven days to be routed through the intermediary site by air and reach its destination, officials said. If a Taiwan resident sent mail to Xiamen, the mail had to be first processed in the Shanghai or Beijing distribution centers and then transferred to Xiamen post officers. Now residents across the strait have a direct connection between their post offices. To speed up mail service, the mainland opened delivery centers in Nanjing, Xi'an and Chengdu in addition to the previous five centers in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Xiamen and Fuzhou. Taiwan also added three centers - Kaohsiung, Kinmen and Matsu - to those already functioning, which were in Taipei and Keelung. Copyright © 2001-2009 Shanghai Daily Publishing House |
