The first stage of work, expected to cost 3 million yuan (US$438,000), would examine damages and safety of nearly 20 of the city's 370 cultural heritage sites. "The city has spent more than 1 billion yuan restoring cultural relics in the past 10 years," said Wang Yuwei, an official with Beijing Administration for Cultural Heritage. The money went toward protecting Beijing's traditional architecture and renovating major heritage sites such as Shichahai Lake, Nanluogu Alley, Nanchizi Street, the Qianmen Gate and Liulichang Street.
