A total of 130 million yuan was used to build compulsory education schools and the rest of the cash was spent providing pre-school education, officials said yesterday. Before the extra money, the government's fourth quarter spending on compulsory education in the suburbs was 600 million yuan. School officials said the government would continue building schools on the outskirts of the city and in areas with economic difficulties next year. In addition, more local teachers would be trained and the kids of migrant workers would be given subsidies. In next few years, the city will work to improve education facilities at affordable-housing centers, such as Pujiang Town in Minhang District, Hangtou Town in Nanhui District, Caolu Town and Sanlin Town in Pudong New Area, and Gucun Town in Baoshan District. Education plans for the Lingang New City in Nanhui District and Changxing Island in Chongming County would also be set out. Salaries will be raised for elementary and middle-school teachers in suburban areas. Sixty new kindergartens will be built in Shanghai next year, 50 of them on the outskirts of the city.
