SEVERAL foods imported from Europe have been destroyed or sent back after the products were found to have safety problems, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine announced yesterday.

The administration has asked all provincial entry-exit inspection and quarantine bureaus to enforce checks on the foods for the following 90 days.

The foods with safety problems included Belgian chocolate, Italian brandy, British sauce, eggs from the Netherlands and Spanish milk products.

They were found to contain chemical ingredients that were higher than the national limit, the administration said.

A batch of Belgian chocolate was destroyed in Chengdu, capital city of Sichuan Province, because it contained artificial coloring ingredients up to 87 times higher than the national limit.

The Sichuan Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau found 8.7 grams of tatrazine and 4.8 grams of brilliant blue, both food coloring ingredients, per one kilogram of the chocolate, Chengdu Business Daily reported yesterday.

The bureau also found quinoline yellow, another food coloring ingredient, which is banned in chocolate in China.

The destroyed chocolate weighed 24 kilograms and was worth 762.5 euros (US$983.1), the report said. It was discovered at a Chengdu food trade company.
