PHILADELPHIA goalie Martin Biron recorded a season-high 40 saves against his former team as the visiting Flyers shut out the Buffalo Sabres 3-0 on Friday.

Biron, who spent more than eight seasons in Buffalo before landing with the Flyers during the 2006-07 season, put together his first shutout of the season in helping Philadelphia win its fourth game in the last five contests.

"Anytime there was a breakdown, Marty was there to make the save and he had some game-savers," Flyers coach John Stevens said.

Philadelphia's defense gave Biron plenty of support, killing off penalties late in the first and third periods, including a five-on-three in the opening frame.

Elsewhere in the National Hockey League, it was: Bruins 4, Panthers 2 Hurricanes 5, Coyotes 2 Devils 5, Islanders 2 Lightning 4, Predators 1 and Blues 3, Ducks 2 (in overtime).

In Buffalo, the Sabres failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities the entire game, Jaroslav Spacek the biggest culprit when he hit the post with the goal at his mercy.

"Getting help from the irons is part of the game," Biron said. "When you move well in the crease, you dive left, right and it stays in your pads or goes off the post."

The 31-year-old netminder has come on strong in his last two starts, allowing just one goal in a win against Montreal on November 15.

Scott Hartnell opened the scoring with less than a minute left in the first period, putting in a backhand goal on assists from Simon Gagne and Andrew Alberts.

Center Jeff Carter struck in the third where he recorded his team-leading 12th and 13th goals of the season for the Flyers (8-6-4).

Buffalo goalie Ryan Miller had 22 saves. The Sabres (9-7-3) have lost four in a row.

In Boston, the Bruins moved into a tie for the Eastern Conference lead with victory over the Florida Panthers.

Marc Savard and Patrice Bergeron had a goal and an assist each to lead Boston to its eighth victory in nine games. The Bruins drew level with the New York Rangers with 30 points in the conference.
