The German pavilion’s works began shortly after that of the France Pavilion, which claimed its construction started as early as November 11, according to a billboard on the French construction site. The Germany Pavilion, known as the “Balancity,” will be completed around April, 2010, said Lennart Wiechell, chief architect of the pavilion. Steel structure of the pavilion will begin to be erected in January and be finished in October, 2009, Wiechell told Shanghai Daily. Before the Shanghai Expo begins on May 1, the pavilion will be firstly used as the headquarters for the country’s preparation team for the Expo, said Dietmar Schmitz, Germany’s Commissioner General for the Expo. The 6,000-square-meter pavilion is Germany’s largest-ever at an Expo. The pavilion, which was mainly composed of three exhibition areas that seem to float within the airy structure, will showcase German urban life and how German design and products can help solve urbanization problems. The German government will invest 30 million euros (US$38.10 million) for its Expo presentation and some German companies will also contribute, said Schmitz. He said that the country would invest more money during its Expo preparation in spite of the global financial crisis. Constructions will begin on another five to seven national pavilions for the Shanghai Expo before the end of this year, said Ding Hao, deputy director general of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination. More than 40 participants have confirmed they will build their pavilions for the Expo. Among them, eight have set timetables on construction.
