The companies face shutdowns and in some cases possible criminal prosecution. As a result of its findings, the bureau said yesterday that it will tighten measures to prevent environmental pollution by enhancing inspection of key enterprises located along rivers and other drinking water sources, and will conduct intensified checks on sources of dangerous chemicals, dangerous wastes and radiative material. The bureau also said it will improve its response plans and warnings for environmental accidents. Officials identified Shanghai Nongle Biological Products Co Ltd, Shanghai Shenye Environmental Equipment Co Ltd and Shanghai Fuyuan Dyeing and Chemical Co Ltd as key violators of environmental safety. Shanghai Nongle, a pesticide producer in Songjiang District, was caught discharging waste water through its rain drainage system last month. It also washed a spot where workers processed pesticide products and allowed the water to flow into the rain drainage system. Officials said they found significant levels of poisonous chemicals in the company's rain water pipeline. The district environmental protection bureau is investigating the pollution incidents and said it will pass its result to police for possible action. Shanghai Shenye, an industrial waste water processor in Songjiang District, was found to be operating after its temporary license expired in July and was processing dangerous chemicals without permit, authorities said. The company was also caught discharging 208 tons of industrial waste water directly into an ordinary water treatment plant without processing. Officials said an October 23 inspection found that Shanghai Fuyuan, a dye producer in Fengxian District, failed to use its waste processing facilities and even installed a hidden pipe to discharge industrial waste water directly into the sea. Local environment authorities said they've received many complaints about the company's violations. The company has stopped production and will face punishment after investigations are finished.
