In cooperation with Beijing’s education authority, police officers visited all schools from primary to the university level to show students what knives are banned and the harm they can do to people and society, according to Beijing Times. Students were encouraged to turn in contraband knives and provide tips to police. The operation will also crack down on the sale of contraband knives around schools, the report said. According to Chinese law, those who produce, sell or carry a contraband knife will be held in custody for a maximum of 15 days and fined up to 200 yuan (US$28.6). Daggers and flick knives with a blade 10 centimeters or longer are banned. Other knives with blades measuring 12 centimeters or longer are also on the contraband list. Police told the newspaper that six people have been killed and 13 others injured in knife attacks on campuses this year across the country. There were two knife fights between students on September 18. In one case, a student at Beijing’s China University of Petroleum stabbed his classmate repeatedly, giving him head and neck wounds. Meanwhile, one student died as two groups engaged in a big brawl at China University of Information Engineering.
