Taiwan Readies To Receive Gift Of Pandas
Created: 2008-11-13 0:41:00

TAIWAN is preparing to receive a pair of pandas donated by the Chinese mainland.

Fan Liqing, spokeswoman of State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said yesterday the pandas would arrive on the island next month.

Chen Yunlin, president of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait, announced during a Taiwan visit last week that the pandas, Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan, would soon arrive on the island and be housed at the Taipei Mucha Zoo. Their names, meaning "reunion," were chosen by the mainland public. The zoo said the pandas would be ready to meet the public around the Spring Festival in January.

The mainland announced in May 2005 that it would donate pandas to Taiwan to demonstrate its goodwill, but the animal's departure has been delayed for more than three years for political reasons.
