TWO first cousins lost a lawsuit against civil affairs authorities for banning their marriage petition, even though the woman underwent sterilization.

The cousins from Henan Province planned to marry last year after their parents granted permission, Zhengzhou-based Dahe Daily reported today. However, the civil affairs authority refused their petition as China’s civil law strictly bans cousins from marrying.

A marriage registration department told them that the law prohibits marriage between close relatives to prevent unhealthy offspring, the report said.

The woman then went to a hospital for sterilization and went back to the department in January.

The couple filed a lawsuit on May 27, when there marriage petition was rejected for the second time. The lawsuit was rejected.

The cousins grew up together and went to the same schools. Their relationship became sexual when they moved to southern China to find work, the report said.
