The Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court ruled that Vladimir Yurkuns, 30, was guilty of obstructing an official in the performance of his duty. The incident happened on August 1, when Yurkuns, who worked in the Shanghai office of a foreign bank, drove his moped on Century Avenue in Pudong, an area where the cycles are banned. A police officer surnamed Ling saw the violation and followed Yurkuns to a gas station on Shangcheng Road. After the Russian stopped the moped, Ling told him he had violated traffic law and asked to see his driver's license. Yurkuns said the license was in his office, and Ling told him to bring it back ?? but to leave the moped behind. Knowing that he couldn't avoid punishment, Yurkuns drove the moped into Ling, according to testimony. The officer then dragged the Russian off the moped and grabbed his key. Yurkuns fought with Ling to get the key back, and the officer suffered slight injuries to his right ankle and left arm, the court heard. Several witnesses supported Ling's version of the events, and Yurkuns also confessed to his actions. Copyright © 2001-2009 Shanghai Daily Publishing House |
