Chai Lu, the presenter of CCTV's "Cross the Taiwan Strait" program, was recognized and attacked by a mob as she was leaving the Royal Hotel in Taipei on Wednesday night, where Wu Poh-hsiung, chairman of Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang party, was holding a banquet to welcome Chen Yunlin, the visiting chief of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait. The mob, all of whom were wearing red ribbons around their heads, were seen besieging Chai while her assistant tried to shield her, in a clip aired by Shenzhen TV Station yesterday. The scene lasted about 10 minutes until more policemen arrived to control the situation. One of the police officers present was heard in the video shouting at the crowds: "Let them go. They are just journalists. Don't get tough on them." Chai was seen being hit by an unidentified man from behind when she and the assistant tried to make their way to the police car. A reporter from Hong Kong-based Phoenix TV was also attacked by the mob at the gate of the hotel after Chai left, Shenzhen TV reported. The mob also clashed several times with police at the scene. Chen arrived in Taipei on Tuesday to begin a five-day visit to the island, the first meeting in Taiwan between leaders of ARATS and the Taiwan-based Strait Exchange Foundation. The heads of the main negotiating bodies of the Chinese mainland and Taiwan signed four agreements on direct sea transport, direct flights, postal services and food safety cooperation in Taipei on Tuesday. Chen's delegation for the Taiwan trip includes top officials from 10 mainland banks. More than 30 mainland reporters accompanied Chen to cover the trip.
