FOUR of China's five biggest power producers have been fined for emitting excessive amounts of sulfur dioxide last year.

Seven coal-fired power plants in Henan, Guangdong and Guizhou provinces and Chongqing Municipality operated by China Datang, China Guodian Corp, China Huadian Corp and China Power Investment Corp released more sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere than permitted, the Ministry of Environmental Protection said. Shenzhen Energy Group Co was also fined.

The government is seeking a 10-percent cut in pollutant emissions in the five years to the end of 2010. The ministry's statement didn't state the size of the fines, Bloomberg News said.

Shenzhen Energy is partly owned by Huaneng Power International Inc, a unit of China's biggest electricity generator.
