AN official who was sacked on Monday for an alleged attempt to molest a young girl in Shenzhen offered 15,000-yuan (US$2,187) hush-money to the girl's father soon after the incident and told him he had "a lot of friends," an audio record revealed yesterday.

The father of the 11-year-old girl, surnamed Chen, confirmed to Xinmin.com that the clip was authentic. It appeared on some BBS Websites.

Chen told the Shanghai-based Website that his friend recorded the conversation between him and Lin Jiaxiang, former party secretary of the Shenzhen Maritime Affairs Bureau in Guangdong Province, with a mobile phone at about 10pm on October 29.

The two men were in a police station for questioning, after Lin had grabbed the girl by the neck and tried to drag her into a men's room at Xinmeiyuan Restaurant at about 8:40pm that night.

Chen said he gave the audio clip to police but had no idea how it appeared online.

A woman, who was identified as Lin's teacher, was with Lin at the restaurant when the incident occurred. Her voice is also on the audio clip.

Lin, 58, admitted in the clip that he grabbed the girl by the throat after he asked her to guide him to the men's room.

"Please, I'm begging you. I'll pay for that. How about 15,000 yuan?" Lin said in the clip.

"What should I do if I step down (because of this)?" Lin said. "You give me a deal."

He also suggested that he would regard the girl as his god daughter if the matter was forgotten.

"We both would be responsible for her future life," Lin told Chen. "We'll choose a time to have a meal together."

Chen said he would ask the police to investigate the incident first.

"I'm telling you I have a lot of friends in this line," Lin said, without referring to what he meant by "this line."

"Do you know how I made my way from Shandong to Hainan, and then to Shenzhen?" Lin asked the father.

Lin, a Shandong native, was transferred to Shenzhen this July from Hainan Province.

"I'm not a hideous person. I'm almost 60 and will soon be retired," Lin said. "How could I face the accusation that I molested a young girl?" he continued.
