Romanian teachers on strike to protest delay in wage hikes
Created: 2008-11-3 19:20:01

TEACHERS are on a one-day strike in Romania to protest a government decision to postpone a 50 percent wage increase.

Trade unions and local media say some 70,000 teachers were taking part. Classes have been canceled, but it is immediately unclear how many children are affected.

Teachers unions have called for second strike on November 18, and public sector workers say they will strike later this month over their own wage demands.

Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu last week approved the plans to delay raising salaries until April 1 to give Romania more time to sort out its economic problems. Tariceanu says he will issue a statement later today.

Romania holds general elections November 30.
