Canucks edge Ducks in shootout
Created: 2008-11-2

THE Vancouver Canucks produced one final flourish to outlast the Anaheim Ducks 7-6 in a dramatic shootout on Friday.

Mattias Ohlund provided the game-winning score with a wrist shot in the 13th round of the shootout, beating Anaheim goalie Jonas Hiller who conceded two goals in the session to the Ducks' one.

The visiting Canucks produced five unanswered goals over the first two periods after falling 0-2 behind and withstood one final Anaheim rally to hand the Ducks their first defeat in six games.

"It was back and forth," Anaheim right wing Corey Perry told reporters. "It had everything in the game. We just came up short in the shootout. Coming away with one point is good, but we always like to get two."

In the night's only other National Hockey League game, the Chicago Blackhawks thumped the Dallas Stars 5-2.

In Anaheim, Perry sent the contest into overtime with a goal just 57 seconds from the end of regulation. Perry also added four assists.

Steve Bernier scored two goals for the Canucks, giving his team a 6-5 lead 8:34 into the third period.

Bernier also scored Vancouver's first goal, sparking a flurry that included four scores in the second period from Ryan Kesler, Alexandre Burrows, Ohlund and Kevin Bieksa.

Ducks starting goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere was replaced by Hiller in the second after allowing four goals.
