INDIVIDUALS will find it easier to hail a taxi at Super Brand Mall in Pudong New Area starting on Saturday as it inked a deal with Shanghai Bashi Taxi to set up a dispatch center and a special lane for cabs at the mall’s north gate, a newspaper reported today.

The area has had a chronic shortage of taxis for three years, according to Xinmin Evening News.

The solution was reached with the help of city and district governments.

Qian Wei, a Bashi Taxi manager, told the newspaper they would send out dispatchers and management at the mall from 7pm to 10:30pm to ensure supply meets demand. Qian added that more staff and taxies would be made available on weekends and holidays.

Both traffic police in Pudong and traffic law enforcement teams in the area said they would cooperate to help resolve the taxi problems.

With a lack of public transport around the mall, complaints about getting a taxi at night have increased since 2006. Authorities tried to solve the problem many times, but a lack of cabs and on-site management proved to be too big an obstacle until now, the report said.

The city’s taxi watchdog said some cabbies turn away locals and look for foreigners who are easier to cheat, according to an earlier Shanghai Daily report.
