Bridge accident kills 11 workers, injures 12

AN accident that killed 11 people at a bridge construction site in Wulong County in Chongqing last night also injured 12 workers, Xinhua News Agency reported this morning.

Among the 12 injured workers, 11 were seriously hurt. The construction site’s manager said the accident happened at 8:20pm last night when the wire ropes broke on a hoist bucket. The bucket carried 23 workers at the time it fell onto the bridge.

Nine workers died at the scene and two died en route to hospital, Xinhua reported.

The bridge spans Furong River. The construction site is in Haokou Village, a remote area in the mountains of Wulong, according to the report.
