The guard surnamed Wang was bit on the left leg and ankle by a panda named Cheng Cheng and doctors said he would need at least three months of rest before walking again, the report said. Both Wang and zoo officials refused to reveal how Cheng Cheng attacked the man and there were no other witnesses as the zoo was closed at the time, the report said. Animal expert Fang Shengguo told the newspaper pandas can climb trees easily and that it would be possible for it to get out of its enclosure. Fang added that Cheng Cheng was probably just curious about the outside world, which would explain why it was trying to get out of the enclosure. Cheng Cheng is 23 years old. It was born in Sichuan Province and was sent to Hangzhou Zoo in November 2004. The animal had never bitten a person before, said the report. Copyright © 2001-2009 Shanghai Daily Publishing House |
