The accident occurred at 4:30pm on Saturday when the victim's mother, Wang Baolin, took her two sons to collect a quilt she had put near the mouth of the brick kiln to dry, the Chongqing Daily report said yesterday. Her son Tang Zhihao followed her after she collected the quilt and accidentally slipped into the kiln. She was carrying her other son on her back, the report said. Tang cried "Mom," before falling in, the mother told the newspaper. "He was only about 60 centimeters from the mouth of the kiln, but I just couldn't catch him," the mother said. "As soon as he fell in, a black smog rose." Wang suffered burns to her legs and right hand while trying to save her son. The temperature in the kiln was estimated to be more than 1,000 degrees Celsius, the report said. Other workers told the newspaper the mouth of the kiln was always left open. "If it had been covered by a board or something, the tragedy would not have happened," they said. The boy's father has worked at the kiln factory for more than four years. Wang also lived at the factory with their two sons. Copyright © 2001-2009 Shanghai Daily Publishing House |
