The researchers with the Lanzhou Glacier and Frozen Earth Institute were conducting scientific exploration when they found the corpse on July 23. The Hong Kong Ngok Fung Rock Climbing Society confirmed that the remains were of its member Lam Chi-wai. Along with Chan King-chuen and Yeung Chi-ho, Lam was lost in snowstorms on August 15, 1998 while attempting to scale the 5,445-meter peak of Mt Bogda. Aw Chinese Army Black Hawk helicopter searched the mountain right after the accident but failed to spot the trio. Another group of rescuers dispatched by the Xinjiang Mountaineering Association only found an empty tent and some equipment in the snow. The rescue continued for 17 days and was then called off.
