A GRANDFATHER in central China's Henan Province was killed by his daughter-in-law after long-term conflicts between them because she had given birth to daughters before having a son.

The 36-year-old suspect, identified as Gao, had given birth to three daughters, which was a cause of great dissatisfaction for her father-in-law. Gao, a Hubei native, married Shang's son 10 years ago. Gao lived a happy life at the beginning.

Gao's husband worked at a cement factory, while his parents were retired. However, Gao's situation in the family deteriorated after she gave birth to a daughter.

From then on Shang and his wife never treated Gao as amicably as before. Gao gave birth to another two daughters and as a result frequently suffered abuse from Shang, who even beat her.

Gao's fourth child - a son in 2006 - should have pleased her parents-in-law.

However, Shang still scolded her about having three daughters who he said were an extra burden on the family. Conflicts between Gao and Shang deteriorated even further and to such an extent that Gao began to have ideas about killing him.

Gao found Shang was napping about 1pm on July 12 while other family members were out.

She used a hoe to hit Shang over the head. After confirming he was dead, Gao made her escape.

With 3,000 yuan (US$440) in cash, she took a long-distance bus to her hometown.

Local police launched an investigation immediately and seized Gao at Hubei's Xiangfan City at 1am the next day.
