THE cost for a Metro ticket from downtown Beijing to the Beijing Capital International Airport will probably be 25 yuan (US$3.64) for a one-way trip, a hearing organized by the city's price supervisor agreed today.

Twenty representatives at the morning hearing selected the 25-yuan price plan proposed by the Beijing Development and Reform Commission while one voted for a plan setting the price at 30 yuan, Beijing Evening News reported today.

Four other representatives suggested different prices - one wanted tickets to cost 5 yuan, the report said.

The 25 representatives were college students, consumers and businessmen and another 10 attended the public hearing, the report said.

The 28-kilometer subway, which is being trialed now, begins at Dongzhimen in Chaoyang District and will cut the time of a trip from urban Beijing to the airport to 16 minutes from the current time of more than an hour by car or bus.

Passengers will be taken directly to Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 at the airport and can also transfer to Metro Line 2 and Line 3 on the airport subway.

The four-station subway is expected to begin trial operations this month and the minimum interval between trains will be about four minutes, the report said.

Ticket prices will be the same for each stop on the airport Metro line.

The Beijing Airport Express Rail Co, the subway's operator, said it made two price proposals based on construction and operational costs, as well as passenger buying power.

However, the price sparkled debate among passengers with some arguing that the 25 yuan or 30 yuan proposals were too high given the 2-yuan ticket price for the capital's five metro lines.

The airport subway is expected to handle about 12.2 million passengers every year if tickets are priced at 25 yuan.
