Shields to reduce road noise

FROM today, road construction teams within the Inner Ring Road will use shields around machines to reduce construction noise by more than 20 decibels, Shanghai Construction and Transport Commission said.
Roadwork teams will erect a 3-meter-high cover around road drills to reduce the noise to about 75 decibels, the commission said. Sound-absorbing panels will also help control dirt.
Said one worker on a construction site in Zizhong Road: "Now the covers are up, we can talk to each other easily. Before I had to shout to be heard."
From January, the shields, which can be moved by two workers, will be extended to road works within the Outer Ring Road, and from next July will be used citywide.
