CHINA Mobile Ltd, the world's biggest wireless-phone company by users, denied a report it will suspend signing up users during the Olympic Games in August.

"The report is not true," spokeswoman Rainie Lei said by phone with Bloomberg News. China ordered the country's phone and Internet companies to stop signing up customers in August to focus on providing services during the Olympics, the Associated Press reported yesterday, citing unidentified employees.

China Mobile, with more users than the combined populations of the United States and United Kingdom, expects to boost subscriber growth this year as it expands into rural areas. The Games will have a "positive impact" on the Beijing-based carrier's revenue, said Steven Liu, an analyst at DBS Vickers Ltd in Hong Kong.

"Roaming traffic on China Mobile's network will be boosted by the Olympics," said Liu, who rates the company's shares "buy."

The wireless carrier has increased spending on marketing and networks in preparation for the Games, according to Liu.
